CZ Vz58 What do you guys think?

I would rather get a AK-47 but they are pretty much illegal here in Canada. Is the Vz58 a decent weapon? BTW I already have an SKS just wanted something a bit more like an AK.

Actually I'm rather an RK 95 TP freak, though they are impossible to come by through official channels in the US and most everywhere else, I'm sure. Sako needs to ship a factory to America and build these things here, the RK 95 blows any Bulgarian variant out of the water. While effectively unavailable to civilians I commend the Puolustusvoimat on sticking with the rifle grenade concept as opposed to some underbarrel abortion like the M203. The best part is because the RK 95 is made to work with rifle grenades, you can shut the gas off! While you lose your autoloading function you will gain accuracy in what is already among the most accurate AK-derived weapons out there.

Sorry, just pining away for that which I cannot have... yet...

I am a huge, unapologetic fan of the CZ-52 pistol in 7.62x25 and I'm quite vocal about that, maybe a mixup?

The Czechs are among the best armorers in the world, you'd be suprised at how many famous guns have Czech origins. Of course John Moses Browning offers stiff competition, but isn't that what arms development is all about? The VZ 58 is a good weapon with a few technical features that are superior to the AKM, such as lighter overall weight even though it has a milled reciever. I'm sure you know the action is a little different as are the magazines. User opinion varies somewhat, some out in Afghanistan curse them for real or imagined reasons, the two issues I see at play are those who want a "real" AK due to their personal familiarity and that some of the weapons being issued to second line units are old, worn pieces that were essentially donations from the Czech Republic.

The VZ 58 pops up all over the world and in my experience seems to be well recieved by most, it's even carried by some quasi-elite forces in the Carribean. It has a chromed bore and while not exactly a tack driver it is more accurate than the average AK. I consider it to be a competent weapon and if I was a Canadian I certainly would own one. I've often strongly considered it even as an American and the product being offered to us is not necessarily as good as that being offered to you.

An object lesson in "they don't have the same stupid gun laws over there that we have here, they have different stupid gun laws" you Canadians recieved a large shipment of some really great 7.62x39 ammo... it is Czech, S&B manufacture, steel core. Some of us here in America are very jealous.

The grip on the CZ-52 feels like a 2x4 compared to my CZ-75, but the 7.62x25 is a long cartridge with impressive, firebreathing ballistics. I can make allowances.

Some people do a little sculpting around the lower portion of the trigger guard. It doesn't bother me that much.

I really wish somebody would make a modern doublestack combat pistol chambered in 7.62x25. The OAL of the cartridge is very close to that of the 10mm. Someday after I finish my 6.5x39 AK project I'll probably pick an EAA Witness, Glock 20 or similar and see what I can do about making the 7.62x25 doublestack come to life. Replacing the breechface would be a lot easier than making a new slide, I see this as the main technical challenge. Making a new barrel isn't hard. Imagine 17+ of those little screamers on tap...! then I'd be forced to convert a Sub-2000 to 7.62x25, actually it'd be more like making an entirely new gun based on the Sub-2000 but that carbine/pistol combo has a lot going for it.
